The economy of innovation in Europe is concentrated in some 50 major centers, while the rest of cities and municipalities, which have traditionally been the backbone of the European economy, face the risk of being increasingly marginalized.
This is the main data that has been released by the study 'StartupCity Hubs in Europe' which is based on an analysis of Big Data data, for which 476 European cities have been selected, and which the think tank 'Mind the bridge' has carried out.
According to the research, in Europe we only have one start center per country: of the 42 European countries that have produced scales, 34 (81% of the total) have more than 50% of the scales concentrated in a city. 27 countries (64% of the total) show a concentration higher than 70% at the main access point. However, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Belgium and Cyprus are the exceptions shown by the rule with 2 centers per country: Barcelona and Madrid, Lisbon and Oporto, Warsaw and Krakow, Brussels and Gent, Zürich and Zug, and Limassol and Nicosia.
Growth of the future of StartupCity, an indicator developed by Mind the Bridge that compares the proportion that a city has in the start-up and scale economy of the country and the current share of GDP to visualize this. divergence between the "existing" economy and the "new" economy of innovation. If values above 1 indicate that cities will probably increase their economic role over time and values below 1 are characteristic of cities that could be experiencing a decline in the medium term. In Spain, the two main centers of startups (Barcelona and Madrid) show values respectively of 2.7 and 1.8, while Bilbao and Sevilla 0.4 and Malaga 0.3. Valencia is positioned around parity.
In an attempt to assess the potential of tier two cities to become centers of larger scale, the Report ranked the 150 initial first level two tier cities that have at least one escalation enterprise ranked by the score of " Innovation potential of citizens "StartupCity centers have not been included in the classification.
